Why You Aren't Calming Down and Why Traditional Stress Treatments are keeping you stuck
If you're living with chronic anxiety, reactiveness and hypervigilance, you already know what it feels like to have your system on high alert stress mode.
Your heart races, your muscles are perpetually braced, your mind is constantly scanning for the next thing to go wrong and you are trapped in a state of exhaustion.
Up until now, you've been told to "manage, calm or regulate" your stress and symptoms.
You’ve been given breathing exercises to force yourself to calm down, cognitive tools to reframe your thoughts or perhaps supplements designed to suppress your cortisol.
Here is the frustrating truth: Those methods are just putting a band-aid on a fire alarm.
They treat your hypervigilance and anxiety as if your body is glitching or doing something wrong.
They are trying to suppress a system that is actively trying to keep you safe.
This is why you feel stuck.
You aren't curing the problem; you are just managing the symptoms of an HPA axis that is locked on high alert.
The Difference: We Don't Manage the Alarm. We Turn it Off.
Your body and nervous system is incredibly intelligent.
Your current state of chronic anxiety and hypervigilance isn't a malfunction—it is a chronically sustained, unfinished protective response.
At some point in your life, your nervous system predicted a threat.
It mobilized an immense amount of physical, biological energy to initiate a preventative shield to protect you.
But before that defensive movement could be executed and completed, it was interrupted.
Unlike wild animals, humans cannot easily "shake off" this trapped energy.
Because that original protective response was never allowed to finish its job, your brain’s predictive mapping is stuck in a loop.
It is literally calculating right now that the danger is still present.
Your HPA axis stays on high alert because your body believes it is still in the middle of a battle from your past.
We don’t try to force your body to relax here. We focus on Predictive Updating.
Instead of managing the symptoms or forcing a hypervigilant body to sit still, my work is aimed at stopping the root problem.
Together, we help your nervous system safely access that original, unfinished protective response and finally complete it.
By allowing the body to finish the biological cycle it started, we update your brain’s internal prediction software.
We give your nervous system the physiological proof it needs to realize: "The threat is gone. We successfully protected ourselves. It is finally safe to stand down."
The moment your brain updates its prediction, the HPA axis naturally turns off. The hypervigilance drops, the anxiety dissolves, and your body relaxes on its own—not because you forced it to, but because the battle is actually over.
Are you ready to stop regulating your nervous system and start completing the unfinished defence responses to help take your nervous system off high alert , threat prediction mode?
As a Naturopath l am trained to help your support and enhance the health of your nervous system.
As a Biological Completion Practitioner, l am also trained to follow the defensive logic of the nervous system: what threat was detected, what defensive response was recruited, what interrupted or inhibited that response and what the system is trying to organise around as a result.
Completion is more than emotional expression, autonomic discharge, relaxation or feeling better. I work with your capacity, readiness and the conditions for an unfinished defensive response to complete.
When completion occurs, the nervous system has new biological evidence from which to reorganise around present conditions rather than an unfinished response from the past.
The Biological Completion Model TM is a framework for understanding and working with the way the nervous system organises when safety is threatened and how it can reorganise when an interrupted defensive response is able to complete.
BCM understands trauma as the persistence of an unfinished biological defensive response.
The symptoms, behaviours, emotions and bodily responses that may follow are not viewed as the trauma itself. They are expressions of the way the nervous system continues to organise around something that remains unfinished.
Rather than beginning with the symptom, BCM asks
